Mercy Watson just loves her toast with a “great deal of butter!” What better way to introduce the wonderful vocabulary in Kate DiCamillo’s books then with toast and butter.
Kate DiCamillo uses wonderfully rich vocabulary words in her writing, even for the early reader group. The stories are not only fun, they show the students how much great words add to a story. They make it so much better, just like a “great deal of butter” on Mercy’s toast.
This unit contains 64 pages that include vocabulary list for each of the Mercy Watson books (1-6) in the series. There is also a “toast” sheet for each word. This sheet contains a piece of toast with the word’s definition and the word on a pat of butter. The sheet also has extra butter pats in case you would like to create any other vocab words. The packet also includes a blank sheet of toast and butter pats for copying for additional words. I use this as the introduction to each book and review of possibly unknown vocabulary. I have included the vocabulary sheet for each book to use as an overall review. We play the toast game as an after the story review. I also use it as a station during the Mercy Watson unit activities. The students love the giant blue plate and pieces of toast. Follow me at my store on TPT, Information Goddess.
