These Eric Carle-inspired mermaid collages are super popular with the children. The project taps into what they’re interested in and involves both process-oriented steps and art-making techniques. It’s a great tie in with The Little Mermaid as well.
Creating the watercolor painted paper for the mermaids is so fun! The kids just love this activity and are totally engaged in creating patterns and experimenting with the watercolors, mixing colors on the paper and observing how the oil pastels resist the watery paint. Creating the ocean for the background is another fun process. I love their free use of color and splatters in creating the waves. Then drawing, cutting, and gluing to create a collage bring another set of techniques into play. Included in the project are how to draw sheets for the mermaid, dolphin, sea star, scallop, clam, fish, jellyfish, sea snail, seaweed, and coral. We spend two classes on these, each 1 hour long.
Time Required: 1 1/2 - 2 hours, broken into 2 classes
