Mesopotamia: The Epic of Gilgamesh and Noah's Ark. Have your students compare/contrast these two versions of the great flood. I use this with my 6th graders as we wrap up studying ancient Mesopotamia. It is a basic, for-first-timers type of essay. It capitalizes on their interest in ancient Mesopotamia and teaches them the basics of writing. Students walk through the entire process step by step: planning with a graphic organizer, building a comparison and 3 contrast paragraphs, and lessons of basic introductory and concluding paragraphs. Templates for differentiation and scaffolding are included.
I use The Message version of the Noah's Ark story and a summary of the Epic of Gilgamesh found at http://www.shmoop.com/gilgamesh/tablet-11-summary.html.
