We all know that there’s nothing better than teaching a classroom full of students who are engaged and motivated to learn. Over the course of 20 + years in education I have tried all kinds of classroom management strategies and these ideas have provided the greatest level of engagement, participation and student success. To be honest, they are the secret to my success as a teacher and why students love my class, work hard and are successful.
These ideas will spice up your Mesopotamia unit and encourage kids to complete their homework, participate in class, do well on tests and quizzes and even keep their desk areas clean. The best part of the whole thing is that your kids will encourage their teammates to do all of these things so that they can earn MESOPOTAMIAN MONEY. You will have way less to do in terms of classroom management because your students will manage each other. Your responsible students or TA will be in charge of the final count of money so you don't have to worry about that :).
The zip file contains the following:
1) Mesopotamian Money: Denominations of 1s, 5s, 10s, 20s (each denomination has its own clip art that relates to Mesopotamia). I've given you tips on how to make this QUICK & EASY for you to manage ;)
2) Word Doc for printing envelopes for each of your class periods' groups
3) Teacher Directions that include
--group names that correspond to the empires of Mesopotamia
--team roles that match with the social hierarchy of Mesopotamia
--ideas for how you can award and take away money from teams based on homework, class participation, keeping their tables clean, etc.
4) Seating Chart with group names and roles
I've used these strategies with grades 6-9 and they all loved it. Every once in awhile I'd have a unit where we didn't use money and every day students would say, "When are we doing teams and money again?"
