One of the best ways to learn about a new culture is to examine primary sources. This lesson gives students the opportunity to do just that! After a brief PowerPoint introduction to Mesopotamian geography and it's earliest settlers (the Sumerians), students will analyze a series of four primary source documents, using a worksheet with guiding questions. This activity, which can be done in groups, pairs, or individually, will culminate with an Exit Ticket asking them to compare what they have learned about ancient Sumerian life to modern ideas and values. A detailed lesson plan will guide you through the lesson. The primary sources have been modified for reading level and length, and include definitions of difficult vocabulary (built-in differentiation!).
