This is meant to be a workshop lesson on how life on Earth developed and changed during the Mesozoic Era. It was designed to be used with my other units on the Geological Time Scale, but can be used independently as well.
During the mini-lesson you will remind students of the events of the Paleozoic Era that affected life during the Mesozoic Era (namely the Permian Extinction). The working portion of the class will involve students reading a two page guided reading passage on the Mesozoic Era, creating a concept map or completing a table on distinct characteristics of each period, and (if you have created timelines) illustrating the Mesozoic Era portion of their group timelines. Finally, the debriefing will consist comparing the timeline illustrations and building an anchor chart with information on life during the Mesozoic Era. Two assessments are also included for measuring student understanding of the Mesozoic Era.
The module does not include an extra step for re-teaching or for students who are absent for the class instruction. Students can use the reading passage and chart at home if necessary.
