Are you looking for a way to have students actively engage with the texts and novels they are reading? Then this is the tool for you! This file contains a variety of metacognitive reading codes which prompt students to predict, question, make connections, visualize, note authors' craft, and clarify their understanding of texts as they read. Each code has two key parts: a symbol and a sentence starter. As students read a text, they use the symbols and sentence starters to record their metacognitive thoughts.
By walking around the room and reading students metacognitive thoughts, teachers can gain valuable information about each students' comprehension of the text. In addition, students can use their metacognitive thoughts as a springboard for Literature Circle discussions!
