I believe students who read well, think well. Students who think well, test well. Learning to think critically is a skill that will serve a reader for a lifetime. Research has identified metacognitive strategies that are especially helpful for students as they learn to engage deeply with what they are reading. Each of these “key comprehension strategies” are identified in the poster “How Strategic Thinkers Think,” and each plays a role in “rounding” out the thoughtful reader. Teachers should understand these key strategies and help students master each one.
