These can be used as bookmarks, desk tags or any other way you choose. The main point is to get the students to be aware that reading is not reading. Reading is THINKING! These symbols, when used consistently can help you see your students thinking and they enable the students to be more aware of their thought process. I use these all the time for the Close Reading process.
