Students will conduct an investigation to determine if a material is a metal, non-metal or a metalloid.
Groups will need a circuit with a light bulb, flash-light,a magnifying glass and their four materials at each group
Students will test properties of four different materials: charcoal, aluminum foil, plastic straw, paper clip, silicon samples
Test 1 LUSTER- Use a flashlight to determine the luster of your object. How does light reflect off of it.
Test 2 MALLEABILITY- Are you able to bend and shape your material or is it broken in to little pieces already?
Test 3CONDUCIVITY-Connect your sample to the circuit. Does your light bulb turn on? Is your sample a conductor or insulator?
Scientific Conclusion- Is your sample a metal, non-metal or Metalloid?
Element Name- What elements make up your material ( teacher should discuss these with the class or class can research these answers on their own)
Chemical Symbol- How are these elements represented on the Periodic Table?
