This activity scaffolds the task of analyzing by providing short pieces of instruction that get progressively more involved. The first few slides breaks down how to analyze. Then weeks 1-10 have students analyzing song lyrics. Weeks 11-20 has them analyze lines from some of the most commonly used texts in the English classroom. Once students have managed studying metaphors in an isolated context, they are then taught to analyze them in a poem. Conceits are also introduced. There are handouts to accompany the power point that you can print off for students to use.
I use these as a bell ringer on Mondays for the entire year. It really helped my students refine the skill of analyzing fictional texts.
