This fun lesson explores the effect of metaphors through the poem "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes. The structure of the activities and the PowerPoint makes it easy for the students to understand metaphors and why an author might choose to use metaphors in his or her writing.
This could be a stand-alone lesson or it could be easily incorporated into a larger literature unit. I embedded it into my Romeo and Juliet unit since I wanted the students to understand the effect of Shakespeare's use of figurative language. It would fit nicely into any unit that covers figurative language.
