This drawing assignment builds a connection between language arts and visual art through the use of metaphors. Students look at the use of metaphors and symbolism in art, and apply that understanding to create their own metaphorical self portrait. At the end of the assignment they are asked to further use their language arts skills by writing an artist statement that explains the meaning behind their work of art.
In addition to the cross curricular connection, this art project also requires students to practice combining multiple materials to create a mixed media work of art. Because of the open ended and personal nature of the assignment, this project can be modified to lower grade levels and high grade levels than high school art.
All in all this lesson pack includes:
-A lesson plan (with a big idea, objectives, vocabulary, national middle and high school art standards, and step by step instructions on implementing the project)
-PowerPoint, to introduce the assignment with project examples
-Project instructions handout
