Product Description
This is a three part 1,300+ slide Interactive PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), challenge questions with answers, built-in quizzes, built-in hands-on activities with instructions and visuals built-in, 13 page worksheet packet that follows slideshow activities, follow-up questions, video links, two PowerPoint review games (100+ slides each), 6 page homework / classwork bundle, modified version, lesson notes, end of the lesson bundle PowerPoint Quiz with answers, and much more.

The PowerPoint begins having the students describe the unit of measurement from a series of slides. The students see a gallon of milk, 65 mph sign, Quarter Pounder with cheese, inches, yards, degrees Fahrenheit. The pictures are then redisplayed with their Metric equivalent. We are then introduced to Chuck E' Cheese who represents the U.S Customary System of Measurement and Yoda who represents the Metric System. Chuck E' Cheese has the students add the number 12 several times and the mathematics gets difficult quickly. Yoda then gives a similar problem that uses the number 10. The math is very simple as students just move the decimal place. Yoda eventually says goodbye to Chuck E' Cheese with his light saber. Yoda provides wisdom throughout. This duet is both fun and educational. The PowerPoint goes on to show how most of the world uses the Metric System while basically only the U.S. does not. The U.S. Customary system is broken down unit by unit describing some history (i.e - the mile is a Roman unit based on 1000 paces of a Roman Legion) A series of slides present the U.S. Customary System and students mark out these from a series and replace with their Metric equivalent. A great video link is provided which shows the cast of American Choppers building a bike and arguing over fractions of an inch (A good case for using the Metric System) The PowerPoint then describes the base units of the Metric System in a series of step by step slides. A series of hidden box games have the students guess a relevant picture form the slideshow. Each slide removes boxes and the student guess about the picture beneath. A portrait of King Hector is then shown. A chocolate milk comes flying in and hits him. He then dies tragically. During this sequence of events, students learn that (K)ing (H)ector (D)ied (W)hile (D)rinking (C)hocolate (M)ilk. Step by step notes then describe how the death of King Hector by chocolate milk can be used to learn the base units of the Metric System. A neat activity follows where students measure a one dollar bill and figure out how long it is in millimeters, centimeters, and kilometers. Answers to the activity are provided. A series of slides are then presented that show the quantity, base unit, and symbol in an organized step by step process. A quiz 1-10 with provided word banks puts the notes to work as students try to make an educated guess as to the base unit best represented by a picture. The answers are provided after the quiz. The question is previewed before the answer is revealed so the teacher can call upon a student or table group. Length is then addressed and a series of challenges that require students to measure common objects in mm, cm, km etc., create a life size plastic spoon sketch by measuring the distances of the spoon that is taped to the table and not tracing it, measuring a curvy line in the slideshow with a rope and then stretching it until it is straight, measuring balls and circles with calipers, and other neat activities. Mass is then described, a neat review of quantities occurs, and a series of activities that involve measuring objects with an equal balance, triple-beam, and digital scale. Some special relations are described such as the Metric Ton. Volume is then covered with some critical notes, reinforcing quantity questions, and then a series of activities determining the volume of regular and irregular shaped objects (l)x(w)x(h) and by water displacement. The directions are included in the PowerPoint. Density is then covered, the irregular shaped objects from the volume activity are then weighed and density calculated. Directions for using density cubes are also provided. A really neat activity is described that uses a trash barrel, a scale, lots of containers, a student volunteer (usually a smaller student), snorkel, mask, and a lot of water. The class determines the density of a student by weighing them and collecting all of the water displaced by submerging them in a barrel (Recommended to be done outside). This is always a lot of fun. Temperature is then covered, a quick review question about Metric / U.S. Customary, Degrees Celsius, and then students learn to do conversions Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice versa. Ghost Rider helps to keep it interesting. The Kelvin Scale and Absolute Zero are also addressed. The rest of the Base Units are covered quickly, some speed and velocity questions with answers are provided. The PowerPoint ends with a guess the picture beneath the hidden boxes challenge. Each slides removes shapes blocking a picture. King Hector dies one more time from Chocolate Milk. This is a great PowerPoint that is full of great hands-on activities but also technical. Please see the entire unit that I offer for sale on TpT called the Science Skills Unit before purchasing this PowerPoint.

This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be interactive as possible and ask many questions, provides built in review opportunities, explains directions to activities, and much more. Transition effects are never used.
