This is a hands-on activity designed with two goals in mind:
• to deepen student understanding of metrics.
• to develop dimensional analysis skills.
Students will be engaged by the challenge the puzzle presents, and this activity can be adapted to work for many ability levels. Ideas for differentiation include:
→ Have students work in collaborative groups to organize the pieces of the puzzle.
→ Because metric conversions only involve changing the decimal place, students can use different colors of highlighters to organize the numbers into related groups.
→ Simplify the puzzle by telling students the correct letter for one or more of the corners of the completed puzzle.
→ Provide a list of conversion factors needed to complete the dimensional analysis.
This activity can easily be used with Interactive Notebooks. The completed puzzle can be glued to one page and the dimensional analysis problems can be completed on the following page.
