First graders studied lots of maps of Mexico to begin the unit. Several maps contained the Pyramids of Mexico. Next, I read the book, Off We Go to Mexico as an introduction to the Mexican culture. Students wrote what they wanted to know more about after a second, silent
picture walk. So many students wrote that they wanted to learn more about the ancient pyramids. I decided to integrate our geometry studies with ELA and Social Studies, and create a mini-unit about the Mexican Temples.
This is student inquiry at its best!
