The topics enlisted during this two-week unit plan belong to the unit named “Mi Cuerpo” of the course. The topics reviewed during this particular unit are parts of the human body (Chapter 2 of textbook ‘Asi se dice 2’) and the importance of physical activity/wellness (Chapter 11 of textbook ‘Asi se dice 2’).
This two-week lesson plan was implemented in my Spanish 2 courses, which are majorly composed of 10th graders with the exception of a handful of 11th graders and a few seniors who are repeating the course. Therefore, most of my students are around age 15 and 16 years old.
I focused on these topics at this level because it is part of the course curriculum designed by the head of the humanities department. Additionally, this topic is highly relevant since a good amount of my students play for a school’s sport team. It is important that they are aware of the importance of these topics in order to be knowledgeable about the benefits of performing physical activity and taking proper care of our bodies.
As mentioned above, the two-week unit objective is to educate and reinforce previous knowledge about the importance of performing a physical activity and the positive repercussions its practice has in our bodies. Moreover, another goal of instruction designed for this two-week period is to highlight the impact on our health, short and long-term, as a consequence of performing one or various physical activities, knowing our bodies and taking adequate measures to take care of ourselves.
Some supplemental topics that I included during the length of this unit, besides the main topics already mentioned above, are the importance of role models, such as athletes, the role of physical wellness in our identity, and grammatical aspects that relate directly to the major topics of the unit.
