This product is a lesson plan developed around the book, "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. It is a true story about the nature and destruction of deadly viruses like Ebola and Lassa. The lesson is designed to further enhance students skills in: a. literary analysis, b. basic concepts of biology and microbiology c. vocabulary (for SAT). This lesson includes teacher instructions, a list of literary devices found in the book, and a template for the analysis and vocabulary portions of the journal. I use this activity as an alternate assessment for our microbiology unit, and to weave in a little cross curricular lesson with the incorporation of literary devices. It is a great end of year project as we know kids are tired of traditional assessment by this time, and it allows for some sessions of quiet reading time in the classroom as well.
