This particular lesson is GREAT for sub plans or graded homework! Students are given the option of reading one of two student-friendly articles about the microscope. After reading their article, students will write a summary of what they have read. Then, students will pick two new or unfamiliar words and define them. Lastly, students will justify their opinions as to whether or not the scientists mentioned in the article would have been successful with or without the use of a microscope.
This assignment is great for students who do not have internet access at home. The teacher can print the articles online and give a copy to the student, so there is no excuse not to do their homework. : ) When I left this lesson for my substitute, I printed several copies of each article and left them in folders at each table. Students then read at their own leisure and completed the assignment at their own pace.
