After the students have completed the first microscope lab, then they get to learn how to make their own slide. I give each student a piece of newspaper or a page from a phone book, and they cut out a very small letter (as small as they can anyways). I then demonstrate the proper technique for making a wet mount slide. Before the students begin they have to review the procedures for using a microscope. Once they have completed that section then they can start working on their field of view drawings. This activity supports Grade Seven California State Science Standard 7A - Select and use appropriate tools and technology (including calculators, computers, balances, spring scales, microscopes, and binoculars) to perform tests, collect data, and display data.
