In this lab, made for elementary school students, students will use a letter "e" from the newspaper or magazine to learn how to use a microscope. When my daughter was in grade school, I found that the microscopes were put away in a cabinet and never used due to teachers being uncomfortable using a tool they had never used before. This lab is made so that students can learn how to use the microscope without teacher help. Of course, if you are going to use this with very young students, I would show them how to do it first. You will need plain microscope slides and coverslips. You can order them from biological supply houses like Wards or Carolina. Your students will love this activity!
