In my new series of Excel assignments, students will learn Excel on a deeper level using the video method. In this method, students watch a video that shows how to do each feature in the assignment, but does not take them through the actual assignment. The video now includes a Table of Contents, which allows the student to skip or re-watch needed features. The student then uses the step by step directions to complete the assignment with a provided starter.
This method has proven more effective than traditional demonstration, as it requires a higher level of thinking and retention. In Lesson 4, students are challenged with the task of not only applying many of the features they've already learned, but will also learn the IF function in a real-world scenario. Students will also learn absolute value, shrink text, rotate text, and other features. The file includes the video (with table of contents) but also includes a SECOND video that give step by step direction on the IF function for those students who have tried it and are still struggling. It is up to the teacher how and when to give access to the second video.
This lesson is now classroom tested. It is challenging! The help video is VERY helpful for kids who are struggling to get the IF statements correct. But it was fun to see the kids catch the excitement of what you can do in Excel!
