This is the Exam for my Microsoft Office Word 2013 Video Tutorial series.
There are two parts to the exam--the multiple choice and the practical. The multiple choice is in print form, though for my own class I uploaded it to UTIPS to give on the computers. It takes about 20 minutes to get through. The second half is the Practical, which requires them to create something in Word and PROVE they can use the program! This half is not yet classroom tested, as I ran out of time at the end of last semester, but I will be testing the practical this coming semester! The practical is estimated to take about 40 minutes to complete.
In my new series of Word assignments for grades 8-12, students will learn Word on a deeper level using the video method. In this method, students watch a video that shows how to do each feature in the assignment, but does not take them through the actual assignment. The process of watching, remembering, repeating, and checking again requires the student to think more deeply and thus they remember the material much better than just by following a teacher who is demonstrating.
The video now includes a Table of Contents, which allows the student to skip or re-watch needed features. The student then uses the step by step directions to complete the assignment with a provided starter. This allows students to go at a quicker or slower pace, depending on their own abilities.
This method has proven more effective than traditional demonstration, as it requires a higher level of thinking and retention. It also allows the instructor to give more one on one time with those who need additional help.
