This resource, which emphasizes research, includes:
--- one reading passage (Agriculture in the Middle Ages) a page and a half in length;
--- accompanying the text is a vocabulary activity and a separate page of comprehension/opinion questions;
--- a “word origin” activity for students to research the origin of common words associated with farming in the Middle Ages;
--- four graphic organizers covering various agricultural and food topics: Farming Methods, Farming Tools (the plow), Farming Tools (the scythe and axe), Crops of the Middle Ages, Farm Animals (Workers, Food Sources, and Multi-Purpose), Markets of the Middle Ages, Food Preparation (Cooking and Baking), Meals (How the Royals/Nobles Ate and How the Peasants Ate), Times of Starvation and Shortages, Food Preparation (Pots, Pans, Dishes, Fire), Making Food Tastier, Feasts/Celebrations, and Knives, Spoons, but no Forks.
Each of these sections has a topic for students to research. Most of their research will probably be done online; the resource and the preview include suggested websites. Answer keys are provided for the organizers, but they are only guidelines.
Answer keys are also included for work pages associated with the reading passage.
The flexibility of this resource means that you can ask students to address a specific topic and you might not expect them to find as much information as I provide in the answer key! The organizers could be used within an interactive notebook
