This activity challenges students to read grade level primary sources on church and civil law from the Middle Ages and compare and contrast these multiple readings. Students will work in groups to identify and evaluate Justinian's code, Magna Carta, Henry II's Common Law, Pope Urban's Promises to Crusade Warriors, and Contracts between Serfs, Vassals, and Lords. Students will present their findings to the class and justify their choices verbally. Then, students will compare Middle Ages laws to current laws from their own states. The final activity requires students to write about whether their current laws seem better or worse compared to these laws from the Middle Ages. Thanks for your interest.
