Students find the Vikings fascinating. It is remarkable how little we actually know about them. They were brutal and violent but also innovative and brave. First, introduce students to the Vikings with a great video (available on youtube, search the subheading in the assignment and show the times listed -- about 20 minutes) The video covers the Vikings leaving Scandinavia to raid and pillage Europe, exploring the Atlantic, finding new lands such as Iceland and North America, and beginning to convert to Christianity. A video guide is included to hold students accountable. After the video, have students read a short but informative reading (with visuals) providing more insight and detail into the Vikings and their affect of Europe in the Early Middle Ages. Students answer questions and are prepared for discussion or further exploration of Viking culture. The reading could also stand by itself without the video.
