This great lesson plan collection includes seven lesson plans on the Middle East.
My students enjoy these lesson plans on the Middle East and have become very engaged in them. The lesson plan collection includes webquests, mapping activities, worksheets, and projects.
The following lesson plans and websites are used in this lesson plan collection.
Lesson Plan 1
Middle East Webquest
Students will gain basic knowledge about the Middle East by completing an internet-based worksheet. The Middle East Webquest has 33 questions and a teacher answer sheet is included. The following great website is used.
I usually use this webquest as an introduction activity for my students and it takes at least one class period for my students to complete the webquest. Feel free to modify this activity if needed to fit the needs of your students.
Lesson Plan 2
Mapping the Middle East
The Middle East mapping activity allows students to map the major physical and political locations within the Middle East. Just download the following blank map of the Middle East (Southwest Asia/North Africa). Please download the Middle East map PDF at
The mapping activity will take at least 1 period. Students just follow simple instructions to complete the map. The mapping activity can be easily modified by the teacher to work with any atlas or age level. The teacher should make at least four copies of the Middle East map for students.
The following information is covered in the mapping activity:
Countries of the Middle East
Capitals of the Middle East
Major Cities of the Middle East
Physical Features of the Middle East (Mountains, Rivers, Deserts, Major Bodies of Water, Etc)
Countries of the Middle East Quiz Answer Sheet (Easy to modify for your own geography questions)
Lesson Plan 3
Hall of Fame/Shame Countries of the Middle East Presentation
This project lets students research a country in the Middle East. Students will create a poster and perform a short presentation about their country. Students will make a decision about whether their country belongs in the Hall of Fame or Hall of Shame. Lastly, the teacher can have students take notes on the presentations for an open note quiz or test if the teacher chooses. Two different grading rubrics are included for the teacher and a student note sheet.
Lesson Plan 4
This great map activity allows students to examine the major locations and holy sites within Jerusalem. Just download the Jerusalem Old City at the following website.
Depending on the age level of your students, the Jerusalem Old City Map worksheet will take 10 to 20 minutes to complete. I suggest giving the assignment at the start of class and then having a classroom discussion about each question. There are a total of 14 questions for students to answer.
Students just follow simple instructions to complete worksheet using the map. The Jerusalem Old City worksheet can be easily modified by the teacher to work with any age level. An answer sheet is included for the teacher. My students enjoy this activity and it helps them visualize the locations of different holy sites within Jerusalem.
Lesson Plan 5
Primary Source worksheet on the Crusades
Students will learn through a primary source about the Crusades and the capture of Jerusalem in 1099. The following website is used.
The worksheet includes 12 questions and takes about ten minutes to finish. An answer sheet is included for the teacher.
Lesson Plan 6
Persian Gulf War Video Webquest
This is a simple and easy to use lesson plan. Have your students watch the YouTube video and answer the questions. The video is from the great BBC/Military Channel series called 20th Century Battlefields. (Gulf War 1991) Watch the video for yourself at
If the site is ever taken down just type in "20th Century Battlefields Persian Gulf War" into YouTube and you will find the video.
This video focuses on the Gulf War of 1991 or Operation Desert Storm. The video also does an excellent job explaining the causes of the war and the technology used by the American military. The video does a great job of complimenting major educational concepts being taught in the classroom on the Persian Gulf War or the Middle East. Students will find the video interesting and engaging. From my perspective this is the best one hour student friendly documentary about the Persian Gulf War. With discussion and answering of questions in class this video worksheet will take at least an hour or more to complete. Twenty-five questions are on the worksheet and an answer sheet is included for the teacher. Finally you can always download the this video right to your computer hard drive by using http://keepvid.com/
Lesson Plan 7
Perspective Piece of American soldiers and Iraqi insurgents
Students will create caricatures of American soldiers and Iraqi insurgents during the Insurgency in Iraq.
