Description

This collaborative relief sculpture is one of the first I teach in my Introduction to Sculpture and Ceramics class and is perfect for upper elementary, middle, or high school art in-class or remote learning models. It gives the students the opportunity to test out carving techniques, learn about relief sculpture, and work as a team. Together, the students create a large image, made up of small clay tiles, that can be displayed in the school.

The best part of this project is that while it is a group effort, each student works individually on one piece of a whole.

In this lesson, students learn how to work with paper clay (or this can be changed to standard clay), how to enlarge an image, complete a relief carving, and additive sculpture. They don't know what they are creating until you reveal the compiled pieces to create the image at the end.

Included in this lesson plan are:

➢Lesson Plan with a big idea, essential questions, elementary, middle, and high school national standards, step by step instructions, vocabulary, and supply list

➢Teacher instructions for distance learning implementation

➢Project instructions handout

➢Collaborative grid PowerPoint

➢Critique sheet

➢Rubric
