In my high school art painting class, one of our first assignments is to complete an in-depth color mixing, color theory project in their sketchbook. This not only prepares them for color mixing for the entire semester, but it also gives them a reference for color mixing and color theory for the rest of the semester. In total, the students are creating 106 color testers in just one week of class time.
Although designed with a high school art class in mind, this sketchbook assignment is also a great way to introduce middle school art students to color. The assignment sheet is editable, making it easy for you to shorten the assignment if needed.
In addition to hand to paper motor skills, I also include an iPad lesson component to bring technology into the classroom. Students explore four different iPad color mixing apps before they apply their color mixing knowledge to their assignment.
This file includes:
➢Color Mixing Lesson plan (including big idea, essential questions, objectives, national standards, supply list, and day to day how to)
➢PowerPoint, also in a PDF format
➢iPad apps list and instructions handout
➢Color Mixing Instructions Handout
This is everything you need to plan and introduce this assignment. It's perfect for grades 5th to 12th and beyond.
