This is a thoughtful and engaging way to get students to reflect on their outside reading. Students are asked to write a letter to the author of their book explaining why this book is so memorable to them. They need to have three reasons to support their claim. In this way, students are guided to write both a business letter and a five-paragraph essay in a fun and painless way! Students really enjoy this because they know their audience and purpose. And, if the author is alive, I encourage students to send their letters, as they will most likely receive a response! It may take a while, but they do receive them! This packet has clear directions, modeling, and a rubric that makes grading transparent and easy.
