"The 13th Zodiac Animal" is a short play originally written for 5th and 6th grade drama students, but suitable for any middle school drama class or after school drama club.
It is based on the legend of the Chinese Zodiac and the idea that a new animal needs to be chosen by the Jade Emperor. However, the tricky Cat goes out of its way to make sure that it is the chosen animal.
The cast list includes 20 parts, some of which could be doubled up for a smaller group. Also, some non-speaking roles could be added to the lineup of zodiac animals.
This play allows for some fun costumes and character acting. It could also be easily adapted as a reader's theatre or puppet performance.
