TASK CARD: Dilation Dilemmas
TEKS 8.6A: Generate similar shapes using dilations including enlargements and reductions.
Follow the instructions to complete all activities in BAGS A-D. Record all answers on the Dilation Dilemmas Recording Sheet and turn in to your teacher.

1. In BAG A (Tyra Photos) Use a ruler to measure the dimensions of the “original” Tyra Banks
photo in centimeters. Record these dimensions in the appropriate section of the Dilation
Dilemmas recording sheet.
• Next, measure and record the dimensions each of the similar photocopies and determine the scale factor used to enlarge and reduce the “original” Tyra Banks photo.
• Answer the questions that follow the activity.
2. In BAG B (Similar Shapes) Identify the missing measure and the scale factors used to
create each set of similar shapes.
• Record the missing measures and the scale factors in the appropriate section of the Dilation Dilemmas recording sheet.
• Answer the questions that follow the activity.
3. In BAG C (Coordinate Dilations) Identify the scale factor used to enlarge or reduce the
the similar polygons.
• Record the scale factors in the appropriate section of the Dilation Dilemmas recording sheet.
• Answer the questions that follow.
4. In BAG D (Color Tiles) Build the following rectangles using your color tiles
• Build a 2 x 4 rectangle. Call this rectangle A. Build a second 6 x 12 rectangle. Call this rectangle B.
• Determine the scale factor for dilating rectangle A to rectangle B
and for dilating rectangle B to rectangle A. Record the data in the appropriate section
of your Dilation Dilemmas recording sheet.

• Build a third rectangle that is 9 x 18, call this rectangle C. Determine the scale factor for dilating rectangle B to rectangle C and for dilating rectangle C to rectangle B. Record your data in the table provided.
• Answer the questions that follow.
