With all of the theory books out there, it is difficult to determine a good course of action for music theory study in the middle school choral classroom. This document is intended to help organize what middle school students "should" know by 7th/8th grade (as dictated by national and MI state standards and theory method books) into music theory units. It includes specific vocabulary to go over as well as general concepts. The product is intended to help you sort through what to teach and when to teach it. It is NOT a lesson plan, but rather an overview of music theory units, especially in the choir setting. It should help you structure your class to get middle school students ready to ready music- in choir especially!
