This is a Common Core aligned poetry packet for D.H. Lawrence’s Bat.
In this comprehensive packet, students read the included poem, and then complete several activities. First, they read an informational text to provide them with background knowledge for the reference in the poem to the Ponte Vecchio. Students are required to explain in their own words what makes the bridge so unique. Students support their reasons with facts from the informational passage. Next, students answer seven post reading questions. These questions ask about the type of poem, require students to support inferences they make, and to analyze poetic devices. Then, your students will take a literary element scavenger hunt through the poem! A handout requires students to look back in the poem to determine and analyze the literary elements of figurative language, flashbacks, alliteration, character development, imagery, and word choice. In addition, students will analyze how the author creates imagery and write an extended metaphor poem by following specific steps. A sample is provided to help guide students through the process.
