This highly scaffolded SMART Notebook lesson guides your students through every step in writing a middle school level persuasive essay. The lessons feature lots of teacher modeling and guided student practice. Students learn to make a declaration, determine arguments, write a thesis, build an outline, practice interview skills, incorporate quotes, practice elaboration and create effective introductions and conclusions. It also includes a simple guided practice with peer review. When you purchase this guide, email me and I will send the guide that provides additional explanations for each slide.
This writing unit is based on a high interest prompt that does not require library or internet research. Students will interview experts on the issue - each other! – and practice writing a MLA citation for information drawn from an interview.
This lesson does not include rebuttal.
The lesson has not been separated into daily lessons; each teacher should determine the pacing for their individual classes. I taught this entire lesson in 5 – 50 minute segments which included a session in the computer lab to wrap up loose ends and type up final drafts.
Thank you so much for purchasing my lesson files. Good luck with your teaching of writing and please contact me with any questions or concerns.
