This lesson is comprised of resources I collected and tweaked in my classroom. I have included everything you need to help your students not only identify the sound devices of assonance and consonance but to also begin to appreciate why the poet uses them and how they affect the tone and message of the poems. The lesson includes lots of explicit instruction including a PPT and video links, background information and pictures, modeling and practice that incorporates the “I do, We do, You do”, the use of either partner or independent practice at the teacher’s discretion, review of simpler literary devices such as personification and onomatopoeia, class discussion questions, exit slip or quiz, and a writing prompt. This lesson should take one complete day with optional homework or could be stretched to two days.
