I taught this incredibly effective lesson in my 7th grade ELA class. Students told other teachers about the lesson, talked about it all day to their friends, and went home and shared the poem and video with their parents. This lesson includes a guiding PPT and cloze to be used for direct instruction/note taking on Tone and Mood, a copy of a palindrome poem that completely changes tone and mood when read in reverse, and links to a video of the poem being read both forward and in reverse with very different tone and mood. It also includes additional practice with fiction passages and an exit slip. This is a very targeted and effective way to teach students to look for tone and mood in either poetry or fiction.
