Research shows that more reading produces better readers, so our kids need to READ MORE! I have found that at the middle school level, most kids stop reading outside of class. I have developed this Middle School Reader's Response sheet to keep my students (and parents!) accountable for reading OUTSIDE of class. My students receive a new sheet on Fridays and they're due the following Friday. To keep them doing this daily, I give them a stamp for a completed response at the beginning of class each day. At the end of the week, I collect their responses, and simply give them two points for each stamp they have received (and maybe an extra point for a parent signature). I also skim their responses to ensure that they are really giving a summary and not just writing the description on the back of the book..not that my angels would EVER try that! :) Grading is SIMPLE, and my students are doing a much better job of reading outside of class.
