I created and use this reading log because of my own frustration with reading logs my own children would have to hand in. Generally, students are always required to read for a certain amount of time each night (usually 20 minutes). Unfortunately, the reality is that most people would like to read each night, but it is difficult to find that time EVERY single night. Many children have other homework and obligations that prevent that from occurring. With this reading log I was able to achieve a few things. Students are still assigned a predetermined amount of time to read over a predetermined amount of time (teachers can adjust this to meet each students individual needs). Once assigned, students take ownership by deciding what to read, during a time they want to read. Also, students are required to convert minutes of reading into the equal amount of hours and minutes read, bringing math to the reading process. There is also the ability for students to go above and beyond the assigned amount, this allows teachers to reward individuals for exceptional effort.
