Bundle Description

Middle School STEAM Bundle (Great for grades 5 to 10)

All four projects involve engineering design activities that promote creative and critical thinking. Descriptions for the individual projects are listed below.

This is a 30% savings over purchasing each product individually.

#1: Inventions – A Design Challenge – STEAM Activity

This is a creative design project for your aspiring inventors and creative thinkers. Students are led through a process to explore how inventions are conceived and then created. This unit employs humour to capture the interest of your upper intermediate to high school students. The final project engages creative thinking and has both design and written components (use of persuasive writing) to market their amazing invention.

This package contains:

-Step by Step Teacher Directions (lesson breakdown)

-Background Information with many URL links for teachers and students.

-Student Think Pages - graphic organizers that employ a guided thinking approach

-a Final Project component

-an simple assessment rubric ( T-Chart)

This product is offered in both PDF and PowerPoint formats (editable).

#2: Pasta Tower Engineering Challenge

Pasta Power Tower is hands-on engineering challenge.  The challenge is to construct a tower as high as possible using spaghetti and mini-marshmallows that will support a given weight (a small juice box) for five seconds. The tower cannot sink below 2 inches (5 cm) of the measured height.

Students complete this STEM engineering challenge in small teams. Our students have found this project engaging and very hands on! The emphasis is on critical thinking and being able to articulate what worked well and what could be improved upon if redesigning the tower. It is a great stand-alone project or could be done with a unit on Force and Motion in Science. The materials used in this engineering challenge are easy to find and inexpensive.

This package contains:

a. The Challenge Sheet (complete with instructions for the student)

b. Teacher Guide (material list, lesson breakdown and explanation of assessment)

c. Background Information (URL links for the student)

d. Student ‘Think’ Page (graphic organizer for the student that employs a guided thinking approach)

e. An Assessment Rubric

#3: Marble Maze Challenge

This hands-on engineering project asks students to design and build a maze for a marble to flow through. The students, working in teams of 3 or 4) use their imagination and creativity to build unique mazes for this STEM challenge.

Using a cardboard soda can flat in which to build the maze, students elevate one end so the marble runs downhill. The winner is the maze that takes the longest time for the marble to complete its journey without stopping. The emphasis is on critical thinking and being able to articulate what worked well and what could be improved upon if redesigning the maze.

The materials used in this engineering project are easy to find and inexpensive.

This package contains:

a) The Challenge Sheet (complete with instructions for the student)

b) Teacher Guide (material list, lesson breakdown and an explanation of assessment)

c) Background Information (URL link)

d) Student ‘Think’ Page (graphic organizer for the student that employs a guided thinking approach)

e) An Assessment Rubric

#4: Mission Possible (Rube Goldberg Project)

This STEAM project is an engineering design activity that combines writing, problem solving, art and creative thinking. Students are asked to produce a Rube Goldberg machine. This challenges students to think about ‘cause and effect’ that will showcase their design and creative thinking abilities. This project could be done at any time of the school year. Included in this package are teacher directions, a student task card, background information, URL links and a graphic organizer for planning their design. No prep involved.
