Environmental Engineering - Problem Based Learning Unit for Middle School


This Problem-Based Learning Unit will motivate students to learn about oil because they will be able to work at their own pace, choose areas that interest them and apply their learning in a real-world situation.

Along the way they will learn to think critically, solve problems and collaborate with their peers. This is about a 3 week unit. Teachers will provide students with a "hook" to the problem based learning unit, help generate driving questions and provide students with an overview of stations they can complete to help keep them focused and gain prior knowledge on the topic.


Included in this unit:
• Aligned to Next Generation Science Standards
• Detailed Lesson Plan
• Multiple ideas for how to "hook" students (PowerPoint, video links, articles, etc.
• 6 stations (2 STEM challenges, history of oil, density lesson, oil spills, environmental engineer info-graphic)
• Handout for students to choose from 3 different culminating projects (children's book, presentation or movie)
• Rubrics for each project are included
• Pictures to post and handout for all stations are included
• Rubrics, article and project assignment sheets are in Microsoft Word format to allow for teacher to edit based on student needs.
• Real-world component could allow students reading their book to elementary students in person or through Skype, presentation as an engineer to teachers, movie shown to various science classes.

This unit was created to teach students about the different states and forms of energy. Students will learn about the different energy forms and states, how energy is applied in a real world context of Work and Power, and how we as a society use energy in our everyday lives.
