Emergency! Are you going to be gone from your Grade 5-8 Science/Health classroom for a few days or even a week or more, don't have the time to plan a science/health activity, lesson, or lab for your absence, and in need of engaging "printable/no prep" Middle School-level science reading and writing work for your substitute or for an emergency sub folder?
Then this is the set for you! It contains TEN unique "print and go/no prep" Science/Health reading and writing assessments that any substitute teacher can use. These printables develop your students’ understanding of some key but lesser-known human body processes, demand close reading and re-reading of the text, and have a variety of questions aligned to Common Core ELA Standards.
Each individual resource in this set involves reading a lengthier science/health-based article (700-1400 words) on an aspect of the human body or health. The titles are:
“Why You Eat, Drink, and Breathe”
“What in the World is the Spleen?”
“A Cut in the Skin"
“What Your Nose Knows”
"Skin: The Perfect Wrapper"
"Acupuncture: The Prick of a Needle"
"The Flu: Influenza Facts"
"Your Amazing Bones"
"Hair, Hair Everywhere"
"Dreams: Keeping Them Alive"
These passages were written at a middle school reading level. Following the readings are comprehension and short answer questions aligning with these key Common Core Informational Text Standards: RI.4.1, RI.4.5, RI.5.1, RI.5.2, RI.5.3, RI.5.4, RI.5.8, RI.6.1, RI.6.3, RI.6.5, RI.6.6 RI.6.7, RI.7.1, RI.7.4, RI.7.6, and RI.8.5
Please see the Preview for examples from this product.
These TEN resources were created to take about 45-50 minutes each depending on teacher interest in being involved in the reading and as mentioned, they require close and attentive reading from the students!
Rest easy while you are gone, these are interesting and motivating printables that are just what middle school kids need to keep engaged and working in your absence. NOTE: None of these printables is offered individually or as part of another collection in my store, they are unique to this bundle!
**This is not just "busy work." Students will be completing meaningful and engaging Science and Health work and acquiring new language arts and science skills while completing these assignments. Your students will be talking about what they learned in your absence when you get back to school!**
