Our district uses the Holt series, so we have the following stories available to us: "Duffy's Jacket," "Three Skeleton Key," and "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street." I added Poe's "The Raven" to this unit that focuses on suspense...just in time for Halloween! I am fairly certain these stories can also be accessed online, but please check before purchasing this packet.
Not only is suspense engaging to students, but it is a great review of plot construction. It is easier to see how complications in the rising action, foreshadowing, flashbacks, and character development make for great stories! At the end of the unit, students have a group persuasive task: they will do a close reading of one of the texts and persuade us that it is the most suspenseful. This is a unit I have been teaching for nine years now, so I think I've got all the bugs out! I recommend it!
