Are you looking for an engaging, thorough, and fun lesson to help your elementary students transition successfully to middle school? Well, here it is! :)
THIS LESSON INCLUDES:
to help measure students' feelings/thoughts about their transition to middle school and measure the effectiveness of the lesson, scoring instructions also included!
• Differences between elementary and middle school
• Tips for success in middle school (including how to handle peer pressure!)
• A great video clip link
of real middle schoolers sharing their transition experiences and helpful advice
• A "chalk talk" whole group activity ("I'm most excited about," "I'm most nervous about," and "I have a question about")
• A S.M.A.R.T goal-setting
explanation and writing activity
• Clickable PowerPoint
presentation with slides set to 8.5 in x 11 in so the pretest/posttest and goal-setting pages will print perfectly as a full page document
• Adorable "Mae Hates Mondays" pre-teen clipart! :)
I taught this lesson to all of my 4th graders and also took them on a field trip to their future middle school. I gave them the included pretest before the lesson and field trip and the average score was 3.14. I then administered the posttest after the lesson and field trip and the average score was 5.15! I had 25/76 students (32.8%) grow 3 or more points from their pretest to their posttest! I completed a MEASURE report for my district office on this data and they were very impressed! :)
I hope this lesson is as helpful to you and your students as it has been to mine! Best wishes to them in middle school!
