Short Vowel medial sounds. Help your students to identify middle sounds. It will lead to a boost in your students' Phoneme Segmentation Fluency on DIBELS.
Don't let your students get stuck in a "What's the first sound you hear?" rut. If you focus too long on beginning sounds for too long your emergent readers will hit a slump. Make sure you change your focus to medial sounds in CVC words. This is a great RTI GOAL for students in Tier 1 or 2 who are making progress on their phonics goals but need a more rigorous goal to continue to be challenged.
These 13 NO PREP worksheets help you to jump start these skills in your kiddos. There are four formats:
1 - Rhyme and Change - cut and paste - Kids change the medial sound in each CVC word to create a new CVC word. For example, "cop" can turn into "cup". (3 pages)
2 - Identify Missing Sound - cut and paste - Kids are provided with pictures of four CVC words. The word for each picture is spelled out however it is missing the medial, vowel sound. Kids choose between five vowels to fill in the missing sound correctly. (4 pages)
3 - Identify Missing Sound - paper/pencil - Kids are presented with 9 pictures of CVC words from all five short vowels. Name of each pic is written in tracing font above each picture. Kids fill in the missing medial, vowel sound. (4 pages)
4 - Identify Missing Sound - paper/pencil - Kids are presented with 12 pictures of CVC words from all five short vowels. Next to each picture is the choice of all five vowels. Kids circle the correct vowel letter that represents the middle sound in each word. (2 pages)
