This middle or high school art project will fit into any middle or high school art curriculum beautifully. Students use the elements and principles of design to create a radial symmetry mandala. They use their name cut from paper as the framework for the mandala and add collage and other mixed media to add interest and personality to their artwork.

This art lesson works great as a get to know you activity for the first week of school in any art class, or as a creative get to know you icebreaker activity in any classroom. Art supplies can be modified based on availability, but this demonstration uses construction paper, scissors, glue sticks, magazines for collage, markers, and paint markers. This art project is great for distance learning, homeschool art, or in the classroom

Even the most skeptical students love this collage mandala art lesson because it is easy to follow and it is possible for everyone to be successful. The college process is meditative and helps ease student anxieties about their artistic abilities at the beginning of the year.

Included in this radial symmetry name design lesson is:

  • A Google Slideshow with student examples and step by step instructions
  • A video demonstration for students
  • An instructional handout with links and QR codes students can scan to see the slideshow and video demonstration from any device easily and fast
  • A rubric for easy grading
