Lilly Ann Granderson was enslaved from birth. The master’s children at her first
home taught Lilly Ann how to read and write. In her desire to share her
knowledge with others, Lilly Ann started a “Secret School” and taught hundreds of
enslaved students to read and write. Lilly Ann was praised as a “remarkable
woman” and was an inspiration to so many who finally gained their freedom and
improved their lives through education.
My student Guided Reading packet has the best of Reading Comprehension
Strategies for students to think critically as they read. They will also learn new
vocabulary and have many Post Reading choices to synthesize the knowledge
they learned from reading this wonderful book by Janet Halfmann!
