This file includes a letter detailing to parents the new social studies unit, the Midwest States, and the culminating project that goes along with it. The letter explains that students will research one Midwest state of their choosing in class as well as at home. Specific information including, what the state's climate is, two popular places to visit, a special landform to the state, etc. will be detailed on note cards.
Students will give a 2-3 minute oral presentation as well as choose from one of the two mini-projects. One of the projects is to create a parade float displaying the information found during their research using a cereal box or shoe box. The other project is to be a pageant contestant where the child can demonstrate a "talent" which may include an art piece, painting, original song or poem that presents the information they found on their state.
This is a great activity that can be used as a culminating project or in preparation for a jigsaw activity.
