This comic strip version of Mientras por Competir con Tu Cabello created by one of my talented students (she will receive half of the proceeds), is a great introduction to what transpires in this poem. Additionally, this pre-reading activity front-loads the students with some important lines and quotes, bringing the student up to speed on the significance of the poem.
The one page comic strip comes with 4 pictures, gets students thinking about the themes associated with the story.
I have also included an additional page on the backside, which allows students to write the "desarrollo" (essay 1) of three "figuras retóricas" and write their significance.
These drawings are used as a scaffolding piece. I use them to create a group discussion around the pertinent themes. Students in our AP Language and other courses (Heritage and 3 Honors) have also utilized this comic strips as a form of preparation, or vertical teaming, for the AP Spanish Literature and Culture class.
Students transition much more effectively into the play because they have a clear visual representation in their mind of the character and the story line.
