This is a "repeat after me" math chant on solving equations that is sung to the tune of a chant in the football movie, "Remember the Titans." (See the web link to a movie clip on the 2nd page.) You also may recognize it from the "Tony the Tiger" commercials.
The chant explains multiple methods for solving one step equations and is great for a 6th grade common core math activity. Use the chant to engage students, introduce the concepts, and to reinforce vocabulary and concepts as they are taught in class.
A student handout of the chant is provided with space for taking notes. Sample notes that could be used are also provided, along with a web link to a video showing how to sing the chant. Students can either repeat after the teacher for each line, or two groups of students can repeat after each other.
Singing math songs and chants is a very effective G.L.A.D. (Guided Language Acquisition Design) strategy.
I hope you have fun with this chant with your class! My classes love it!
